The area was originally surveyed by John Cameron, a New South Wales Lands Department Surveyor, who led the first Survey Party along the New South Wales / Queensland Border during 1879-1881.
In 1860, the Government of Victoria, then Australia's richest State, decided to sponsor a lavish expedition to make the first south-north crossing of the continent to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
